German Vocabulary List PDF Free: What to Download First

What a useful German vocabulary PDF should include before you print or save it.

A good PDF is more than a long list

Many German PDF lists are just copied dictionary entries. That is not enough for a beginner. A useful list should show the German word, a clear English meaning, the word type, and an example sentence when possible.

If the list has nouns, it should include der, die, or das. If it has verbs, it should help you recognize the action quickly. If it has 500 or 1000 words, it should still be easy to scan.

Start with the right size

The best word count depends on your goal. A short list is better for practice. A long list is better as a map.

  • 100 words: best for a first week of sentence practice.
  • 300 words: useful for basic reading and review.
  • 500 words: good for a wider beginner vocabulary.
  • 1000 words: useful as a reference, but too large for one study session.

How to use the PDF

Print the list or save it on your phone. Mark ten words. Read the meanings. Then use the words in short German sentences before adding more.
