How to Learn German Vocabulary Without Forgetting It
A study method for turning German word lists into memory without long, random drilling sessions.
Forgetting is usually a context problem
German vocabulary is hard to keep when every word appears alone. A word like gehen is simple, but it becomes much stronger when you see it in Ich gehe, Gehst du, and Wir gehen.
The goal is to meet the word in enough clear sentences that meaning comes back quickly.
Use a ten-word loop
Choose ten words. Read their meanings once. Then move into sentence work before your attention gets stale.
- Read each word and say the English meaning.
- Read three to ten sentences that reuse the same words.
- Listen to the sentences if audio is available.
- Cover the German and rebuild it from English.
- Return the next day with a smaller review group.
Keep the list, but make sentences the center
Downloadable lists are useful for planning and printing. They should point back into sentences quickly. That is where German word order, articles, and verb forms start to stick.
